What counts as a dental emergency
These are the problems patients most often call us about. If you're unsure how serious yours is, phone us and describe it — that's what the call is for.

Severe or persistent toothache
Pain that keeps you awake, throbs, or worsens with heat or biting can indicate infection in the nerve of the tooth.

Broken or chipped tooth
A fracture can expose the inner layers of the tooth. Even a painless chip is worth checking, as sharp edges can cut the tongue.

Lost filling or crown
The remaining tooth is left unprotected and can decay or fracture further. Keep the crown if you still have it and bring it with you.

Swelling or an abscess
Facial or gum swelling suggests infection and needs prompt attention. Spreading swelling is a reason to seek emergency medical care.

Knocked-out or loosened tooth
Time matters most with these. Follow the first-aid steps below and call us straight away.

Bleeding that won't settle, or a cut to the lip, cheek or gum after a knock, should be assessed.

Toothache
Rinse gently with warm salty water and keep the area clean. Over-the-counter pain relief may help — follow the packet directions and your pharmacist's advice. Don't place aspirin against the gum.

Knocked-out adult tooth
Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it's dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline. Reposition it in the socket if you can, otherwise keep it in milk and call us immediately — it is time critical. Never re-implant a child's baby tooth.

Broken tooth
Save any fragments, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.

Swelling
Call us the same day. Seek emergency medical care if swelling spreads towards the eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
What happens at an emergency appointment
- Getting you comfortable first. Relieving pain and settling infection takes priority over anything cosmetic.
- Finding the cause. An examination and, where needed, an x-ray to see what's happening inside the tooth and bone.
- Options explained. What can be done today, what it costs, and what the alternatives and risks are.
- A plan for afterwards. Emergency care is often the first step; we'll book any follow-up such as a restoration or root canal.
